Child Care Licensing

NH Child Care Search

Please read this valuable information about Child Care Search. You may enter the search tool below.

Child Care Search contains information on licensed child care programs. There are approximately 1,200 licensed child care programs in New Hampshire. See FAQ to learn who must be licensed.

This site is designed to give families information about each licensed child care program, including the licensing visit history with a summary of violations, if any. Child Care Search lists licensed child care programs by town and zip code. A glossary of key terms is provided.

Families are encouraged to talk to the child care provider about their licensing visit history and to spend time at the child care program to determine whether the child care provider is a good fit for their child and family.

We have included links to related offices within the Department of Health and Human Services and a link to the NH Child Care Resource & Referral Agency Network. These agencies can help you choose the right child care for your family and provide other helpful information.

Understanding the Licensing Visit History:
This website provides information about a child care program’s licensing visit history and rule violations from January 1, 2003 to the present. Important information about how to understand a program’s licensing visit history and other tips are available in the FAQ. We strongly urge you to read this information in the FAQ before reviewing the licensing visit history.

Licensing Visit Information on Our Website Includes:

  • When a visit resulted in no violations found.
  • For critical rule violations, the rule number along with a brief summary of the rule text. Whether a corrective action plan (CAP) was requested, accepted or unaccepted is noted. Acceptance of a CAP is not proof that the CAP was actually completed. See FAQ.
  • The existence of non-critical rule violations. Specific non-critical violations will not be included on this website. A sample of a non-critical violations checklist is in the glossary.

How To Get More Information
Specific detailed information about visits is not currently available on the website, however a direct email link to the Bureau of Child Care Licensing (BCCL) to request a copy of a Statement of Findings (SOF) or non-critical violations checklist is provided. The most recent Statement of Findings is required to be posted and available for families to review at the child care program.

Degrees of Violations
A range of possibilities exists for any type of violation. For instance, a violation of staff to child ratios can mean that there were not enough staff regularly scheduled to work at the program or it may mean that a child care program had enough staff but needed to stagger their lunch breaks. A violation regarding sharp objects could be a sharp knife accessible to children or a sharp edge on a chair that was removed immediately when it was brought to the provider’s attention. A link to two actual SOFs is provided on this website. Please click here (sample 1, sample 2) for a sample of an SOF.
